A new SWF project explores the intersection of space security, nuclear security, and commercial space, thanks to a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

The Secure World Foundation is launching two new programs to strengthen strategic security in an era of rising tensions and increasing space activity.

These efforts are part of a new project titled “Strengthening Strategic Stability at the Nexus of Space and Nuclear Security.” It addresses growing gaps in global security: the limited understanding of how actions in space, especially low Earth orbit, can shape nuclear stability, and the interconnected nature of how space security, nuclear security, and commercial space efforts shape strategic risk and escalation.

1. The Space Boot Camp

Held in Washington, D.C., this week-long intensive will train early-career nuclear security professionals in space governance, satellite systems, the commercial space sector, and the space-nuclear connection. The program includes seminars, a hands-on tabletop crisis exercise, and a follow-up series of virtual lectures.

Outcome: A new generation of arms control professionals with the cross-domain knowledge to engage confidently in space-related security issues.

2. The Dialogue Series

(in partnership with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace)

This two-year effort will convene experts from space security, nuclear security, and commercial space for confidential, cross-sector conversations. The dialogue will explore areas of potential escalation and misperceptions between communities, and practical recommendations for risk reduction.

Outcome: Stronger relationships, clearer mutual understanding, and a more informed foundation for future policy development across sectors.

These efforts are made possible by a generous grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
