Event Description
Secure World Foundation (SWF) will co-sponsor and contribute to the Second Space Capacity Allocation for the Sustainability of Space Activities Workshop, taking place June 3–5, 2026, at Politecnico di Milano in Italy. This event builds on a previous workshop co-organized in 2023 and continues advancing international discussions on space sustainability, space governance, and the long-term management of the orbital environment.
As global reliance on space-based services continues to grow—driven by commercial space activities, the emergence of new space actors, and increased deployment of satellites—the space environment is becoming more complex and congested. This workshop brings together experts from across sectors to address these challenges and explore approaches to defining and managing the capacity of the space environment.
The workshop will convene space operators, policymakers, legal experts, and researchers working in fields such as orbital debris, space law, and space policy. Discussions will focus on advancing research and building consensus around methodologies for space capacity modeling, with the goal of supporting future international frameworks and responsible behavior in space.
Participants will explore key factors influencing space sustainability, including long-term orbital capacity, space traffic management, emissions from launch and re-entry, integration with air traffic systems, and the environmental impacts of space activities such as light pollution. The workshop will also provide an interdisciplinary platform to examine these issues through legal, technical, and economic perspectives, contributing to broader multilateral discussions on space and ongoing efforts within forums such as UN COPUOS.
SWF will play an active role in the workshop by contributing to discussions on linking technical approaches to policy solutions, reinforcing its commitment to advancing practical, cooperative approaches to space governance and sustainable space operations.
The workshop is organized by Politecnico di Milano, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), and is sponsored by the GREEN SPECIES project funded by the European Research Council, with SWF serving as a co-sponsor.
