Secure World Foundation has published two statements delivered during the 63rd session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee (STSC) of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) in February 2026, highlighting the Foundation’s ongoing work to support the long-term sustainability, safety, and peaceful use of outer space.

Under Agenda Item 4 (General Exchange of Views), SWF provided an overview of its activities since February 2025, including the organization of the 7th Summit for Space Sustainability in Paris and the announcement of the 8th Summit, to be held in Brasília, Brazil, on November 4–5, 2026. The statement also highlighted SWF’s recent publications, including the updated Handbook for New Actors in Space and the COPUOS Briefing Book, as well as continued engagement on space situational awareness (SSA), Earth observation, and international cooperation.

Under Agenda Item 11 (Long-term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities), SWF welcomed the establishment of the Expert Group on Space Situational Awareness and shared lessons learned from its policy dialogues, workshops, and capacity-building efforts conducted throughout 2025. The statement emphasized pragmatic, safety-focused approaches to SSA coordination, including prioritizing actionable information sharing, leveraging existing systems, and delivering early, practical outcomes—such as improving points of contact among satellite operators—to enhance spaceflight safety and reduce risks of misunderstanding.

Together, these statements underscore SWF’s commitment to supporting COPUOS and its subcommittees through research, convening, and policy engagement aimed at strengthening space sustainability and international cooperation.
