SWF Statement – UN COPUOS STSC, Agenda Item 4: General Exchange of Views on LTS, SSA, and Satellite Servicing (February 2022)

Secure World Foundation highlights its support for the implementation of the 21 Long-Term Sustainability (LTS) Guidelines and the formation of the new LTS Working Group under a five-year mandate. The Foundation emphasizes its commitment to advancing sustainability, legal development, and cooperative use of space technologies. Key updates include:

• Space Sustainability Summit:
  SWF hosted the third Summit for Space Sustainability virtually in 2021, reaching a global audience, and announced that the 2022 Summit will be held in London in partnership with the UK Space Agency.
• Handbook for New Actors in Space:
  Marking its fifth anniversary, SWF released Chinese and French editions and called for feedback for a new edition under development.
• CONFERS Leadership:
  Continued its role in the Consortium for Execution of Rendezvous and Servicing Operations (CONFERS), which now includes 50+ members and has progressed on ISO satellite servicing standards and satellite refueling practices.
• SSA and Debris Mitigation:
  • Co-organized the 9th AMOS Dialogue, focusing on using blockchain and other tools to increase trust in international SSA data sharing.
  • Held a policy forum on large constellations and space traffic management practices.
• Satellite Dashboard Launch:
  Announced a new tool, the Satellite Dashboard (developed with CSIS and UT-Austin), which offers public insight into close approaches in GEO, aiming to improve transparency in space operations.

SWF reaffirmed its ongoing support for the peaceful, secure, and sustainable use of outer space in alignment with COPUOS objectives.
