Secure World Foundation’s 2019 statement highlights its continued leadership in promoting space sustainability, supporting the implementation of Long-Term Sustainability (LTS) Guidelines, and expanding global SSA cooperation.

Key updates include:

  • LTS Guidelines Implementation:
    SWF co-sponsored a side event during the STSC session with Austria, Brazil, and South Africa on LTS guideline implementation, reinforcing multilateral support for COPUOS consensus work.
  • New Executive Director:
    SWF welcomed Dr. Peter Martinez (former LTS Working Group Chair) as its Executive Director, succeeding Dr. Michael Simpson.
  • SSA & Space Debris Dialogues:
    SWF hosted major international workshops on SSA policy and data sharing, including events in:
    • India (with NIAS)
    • Republic of Korea (with KARI)
    • United States (AMOS Dialogue, CODER Workshop, DC panel on space traffic management)
  • CONFERS and Industry Engagement:
    Through CONFERS, SWF continued advancing norms for on-orbit servicing and proximity operations, publishing guiding principles and engaging a growing international industry base.
  • Youth, Education, and Outreach:
    Sponsored travel to the IAC, Space Generation Congress, and the Lachs Moot Court in Bremen. Topics covered included CSR in space, insurance and responsible behavior, and citizen science.
  • Space2030 Agenda & ISU Project:
    Sponsored the Space2030 Team Project at ISU’s Southern Hemisphere program. This effort focused on prioritizing items for the Space2030 agenda from the perspective of the Global South.
  • Upcoming Summit:
    Announced the first Summit for Space Sustainability to be held in June 2019 in Washington, DC, focused on building an action plan for behavioral norms in space.
