Ana Maricela Ávila Becerril

My experience
AnaMaricela Ávila Becerril is Minister Counsellor at the PermanentMission of Costa Rica to the United Nations in New York, where she focuses ondisarmament, international security, and emerging technologies. With over 15years of diplomatic experience, she has worked extensively on issues related toouter space, cyberspace, nuclear policy, artificial intelligence and armscontrol.
Beforeher current role, Ms. Ávila served as a Political Advisor at the Ministry ofForeign Affairs of Costa Rica, where she provided expertise on peace andsecurity matters. She was also actively involved in the negotiationsestablishing the Latin American and Caribbean Space Agency. From 2014 to2020, she was posted at the Permanent Mission of Costa Rica to InternationalOrganizations in Vienna, leading efforts on space security, nuclear issues, andgender mainstreaming.
Ms. Ávilabegan her diplomatic career in 2010 at the Costa Rican Embassy in New Delhi.She also coordinated bilateral relations with countries in Asia, Africa, andOceania and served as the Focal Point for the Forum for East Asia-Latin AmericaCooperation (FEALAC).
Shepursued studies in Physics and International Affairs and completed a Master’sProgram in Diplomacy at the University of Costa Rica in collaboration with theCosta Rican Diplomatic Academy. Throughout her career, she has worked tostrengthen global cooperation on science, security, and technology, with afocus on advancing responsible policies in international peace and security.
