Event Description

Please join the Secure World Foundation for a webinar featuring the 2025 Space Sustainability Research Fellows as they present findings from their research on two core issues shaping space sustainability today: information sharing and the circular space economy.

Each year, SWF’s Space Sustainability Research Fellowship program supports experts in examining fundamental concepts that underpin the secure, sustainable, and peaceful use of outer space. In 2025, the Fellowship focused on critical issues in space sustainability, including improving information sharing and the circular space economy.

During this webinar, the 2025 Fellows will discuss their research, key findings, and implications for policymakers, industry, and international organizations, followed by audience Q&A.

SWF has released the Fellows’ full reports and executive summaries in advance of the webinar:

About the 2025 Space Sustainability Research Fellows:

Deborah Housen-Couriel Deborah Housen-Couriel is an expert legal practitioner, consultant and researcher in the fields of outer space law, cybersecurity, and data privacy. She was a Core Expert in the drafting of the Manual on International Law Applicable to Military Uses of Outer Space (MILAMOS); and is a member of the Editorial Board of the Encyclopedia of International Space Law (MEISL) at McGill University. Deborah teaches International Space Law at the Law Faculty of Hebrew University, where she is on the Advisory Board of the Cyber Security Research Center; and Information Policy and Regulation at Reichman University’s Data, Government and Democracy program. She is the founder and principal of Housen-Couriel Law Offices, a practice focusing on tailored compliance solutions for clients in Israel and internationally. Her most recent areas of academic research include best practices for information sharing between the private and public sectors, and as an SWF Fellow she will explore information sharing to promote the sustainability of outer space activities.
Dr. Beril Saadet Turnbull Dr. Beril Saadet Turnbull is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Durham University, specialising in space sustainability and circular economy strategies. She holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Leeds, where she was a Marie Curie Research Fellow and both a BSc and MSc in Materials Engineering from Istanbul Technical University. A holder of a European patent for innovations in polymer recycling, her research now focuses on developing reuse, recycling, and repair approaches for in-orbit assets to enable a sustainable space economy. As an SWF Fellow, Beril will be working with Calum Turner to explore the circular space economy.
Calum Turner Calum Turner is a systems engineer working for Telespazio in ESA’s Clean Space Office. He has studied at ISAE-SUPAERO, the University of Edinburgh, and the International Space University, and holds master’s degrees in aerospace engineering and astrophysics. His research builds on his experience of exploring a circular space economy through early phase system studies in partnership with European industry and will focus on asking if the concept of a circular space economy is the best way of capturing the aspirations of the space sustainability community. As an SWF Fellow, Calum will be working with Beril Saadet Turnbull to explore the circular space economy.

The Secure World Foundation looks forward to sharing the Fellows’ findings, including their full reports and executive summaries, before the webinar.
