Tracking Global Counterspace Capabilities Event Recording Now Available

Counterspace Capabilities

On Wednesday, April 20, 2022, SWF and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) co-hosted an event on "Tracking Developments in Counterspace Weapons". The event discussed the recent developments and trends in global counterspace capabilities in the 2022 SWF Global Counterspace Capabilities report and the CSIS 2022 Space Threat Assessment. as well as their relation to current events.

The event began with a special briefing from Mr. John Hill, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space and Missile Defense Policy, and Mr. Eric Desautels, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Emerging Security, who provided more details on the new U.S. government commitment on destructive anti-satellite testing that was announced by Vice President Kamala Harris on April 18th.

Their briefing was followed by a keynote presentation from Dr. Michael Mineiro, V.P. Legal, Regulatory, and Government Affairs with HawkEye 360, Inc, who talked about Hawkeye's ability to detect GPS interference as part of their commercial radio-frequency monitoring mission.

The event concluded with a panel discussion between Dr. Brian Weeden, Director of Program Planning, SWF; Ms. Victoria Samson, Washington Office Director, SWF; Ms. Kaitlyn Johnson, Deputy Director and Fellow, CSIS Aerospace Security Project; and Ms. Makena Young, Associate Fellow, CSIS Aerospace Security Project; moderated by Mr. Todd Harrison, Director, Defense Budget Analysis, Director, CSIS Aerospace Security Project and Senior Fellow, International Security Program. The panel talked about the highlights and major events from their 2022 reports, their initial thoughts on the use of space and counterspace in the war in Ukraine, and the longer term trends in counterspace capabilities they've observed over the last five years.
